The Spadena House, also known as the Witch house of Los Angeles, was originally built in 1921 by Hollywood art director Harry Oliver. It was designed as a whimsical, storybook-style structure to serve as offices and dressing rooms for Irvin Willat’s film studio in Culver City, which specialized in silent films. While it wasn’t necessarily a movie set backdrop, it was meant to be part of the studio’s environment, capturing the fairytale aesthetic they wanted to evoke.
Later, in 1934, the entire house was moved to Beverly Hills, where it was transformed into a private residence, complete with a storybook gate and a bridge over the water of an authentic moat.
